![]() ![]() We drove about 20 minutes to find a hike called Treasure Falls, which is essentially a giant frozen waterfall. I kept these elements on my body and skipped the shower before dinner so not to lose any of the benefits! I also bought some oils and bath salts from the Spa shop to take home. They used a magnesium forest blend scrub that melted into my skin to create relaxation and finished off with shea butter that smelled outstanding. The treatment was more of a relaxing scrub down than a muscular massage. We tried the new Magnesium Melt massage which was pretty incredible. ![]() The goal of this Japanese technique is to walk in silence, be present in nature and pay attention to your surroundings. Hiking is one of my all time favorite activities, and doing it this way was incredibly exhilarating. This was a two-mile hike through the woods that entailed putting metal spikes on our shoes so we could easily move up to the top. The next day, we did Forest Bathing with a woman named Sabra. It’s way more fun doing this with a group while listening to Will tell us about the benefits of a cold plunge. I felt pretty confident going into this since I swim at Barton Springs daily, but that is still 20 degrees warmer! While it was cold, it was warmer than the crisp air. We hung out Wim Hof-style for four minutes, over two rounds. We started out soaking in the 100-degree pool and then went into the 48-degree cold river. Then we hung out in the pools, grabbed a frozen cocktail at the bar and got ourselves ready for Will’s Cold Plunge in the river. It’s truly so nice to have someone else force you to relax and be present. It was all about cultivating relaxation, rejuvenation and a therapeutic experience. People flock here and soak all day not only to mentally check out, but to experience the 13 elements in these natural pools that are rejuvenating for your body and soul, including zinc, magnesium, iron and more. They take the temperature of the pools every two hours and have signs near each one to alert guests. They never manipulate the actual water and it even heats up buildings in town! To keep the pools heated around the hotel, they slowly pump in the water, helping to ease the temperature. There is so much history here, as The Mother Spring, which lies in front of the hotel entrance, is the deepest hot spring in the world, passing 1,000 feet and reaching 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Biomutant isn’t the worst game I’ve played this year. I don’t want to sound like a wet blanket here. It’s also silly to hear the narrator say things in combat like “killed that one” or “slash!” It’s not the worst game and there is fun to be had Image: Josh Knowles / KnowTechie It is a long process and with fairly weak writing and it doesn’t pay off at all. The game finds it relevant to let the speaker talk, and then the narrator tells you what’s up. Each character you encounter that you speak with talks in gibberish, like in Banjo and Kazooie. He voices almost everything but your light side and dark side. The last major story gripe is that the entire thing is told by a narrator. I feel like this story was rewritten a lot. Your dad (or Popsi) gets yeeted off the side of a cliff. She dies so quickly, I thought it was a joke. Your mom (or Mooma) is a great protector of the village and founder of Wung-Fu. Your parents die early in a flashback and it’s hilarious. It’s supposed to be an emotional ride about running from your destiny and finding who it is you really are by cutting your own path. It’s not a great one, of course, but there is a lot of it. However, if we are talking about the story, it also important to note this game is heavy on it. The game, by default, believes I went to both places, kinda silly in my opinion. As I leave, I’m chastised by several villagers that were upset I considered team Conan the Barbarian. I immediately beeline to team friendship and form an alliance. I’m told to meet with a group that believes might is right or the other, that thinks that working together is the only way to survive. Early in the game, I was presented with a choice to join an alliance. The story offers some options to change the path, but the light and dark system come out to “be a jerk” or “don’t be a jerk”. The game forces you to be a little more flexible at times, but overall, it’s very messy. Target tracking in combat can be frustrating at times, with many attacks not going where they are needed or enemies getting pulled into attacks that shouldn’t be. Guns allow you to put down a lot of damage with a lot less risk and those special attacks aren’t something you can lean on. That character customization from earlier? From my experiences, most of it doesn’t matter because dual wielding can’t match the damage output of heavier weapons. I wouldn’t call the game anti-fun but it doesn’t do anything exceptionally well. Unfortunately, I’ve just about completely lost all desire to continue this adventure. The game’s first story beats have you dealing with uniting the tribes and standing against the giant World-Eaters. ![]() I’ve put about 12 hours into Biomutant and admittedly have only really just grasped where the story is heading. Sounds fantastic, right? Biomutant is a jack of trades, master of none Image: Josh Knowles / KnowTechie Speaking of weapon combos, the game’s “Wung-Fu” system is pretty standard for a hack-and-slash game, but different weapon types really jazz it up. There’s even a lot of combat flexibility with skills in both psi powers and mutant abilities that can be flexed into the weapons you use. It also offers a surprisingly high amount of character customization and design for a small studio endeavor. You see, Biomutant is surprisingly pretty for a last-gen game. It really attempts to do a lot, and either the small studio broke off more than they could chew, or in the four years since the game was announced, it went through numerous creative visions. ![]() Open-world RPGs are the flavor of the month and one with this level of customization and a unique world concept could stand above them all.īiomutant tries. The right to a jury trial and the right to habeas corpus, for instance, were positive rights because they were procedures provided by the government. Meanwhile, positive rights were defined explicitly in terms in governmental authority. As Thomas Paine once put it, “A natural right is an animal right, and the power to act it, is supposed … to be mechanically contained within ourselves as individuals.” Eating, walking, thinking, and praying, for instance, were all things that individuals could do without a government, so they were all easily identifiable as natural rights. ![]() Natural rights were all the things that we could do simply as humans, without the intervention of a government. Unless we approach the task of constitutional interpretation on their terms rather than on ours, the First Amendment’s original meaning will remain elusive. For the founders, rights were divided into two categories: natural rights and positive rights. In other words, we’ve been focused on discerning an image in a single puzzle piece rather than looking for its place in a broader puzzle.įor us, a constitutional “right” is a legally enforceable privilege or immunity - something that the government has to provide us (e.g., our “right” to a jury trial) or something that the government cannot take away (e.g., our “right” to possess personal firearms for self-defense).īut American elites in the late 18th century understood their “rights” in a very different way. The key to understanding the original meanings of the speech and press clauses is to step back from a search for the meaning of particular rights and instead try to appreciate how the founders thought about rights more generally. ![]() But maybe there was an order to the chaos in a way that we haven’t previously appreciated. Constitutional disagreements were commonplace back then, just as they are today. ![]() Of course, attitudes toward speech and press freedoms were not uniform. If the founders couldn’t even agree among themselves about that type of law, then surely looking for the First Amendment’s “original meaning” is like searching for the Holy Grail.īut perhaps we have framed the question in entirely the wrong way, seeing hopeless confusion where the founders would have perceived a more ordered disagreement. Only a decade after the Constitution went into effect, Americans vehemently disagreed over whether Congress could pass the Sedition Act of 1798, which banned false and malicious criticisms of the federal government. As leading First Amendment scholar (and former dean of Richmond Law) Rodney Smolla puts it, “One can keep going round and round on the original meaning of the First Amendment, but no clear, consistent vision of what the framers meant by freedom of speech will ever emerge.” A quick look at the history reinforces Smolla’s point. For jurists of all stripes, interpreting the First Amendment is a historical dead zone.īut why? The most straightforward reason, it seems, is that nobody knows what the First Amendment originally meant. With only peripheral exceptions, however, modern judicial decisions about expressive freedom do not consider original meaning at all. The Supreme Court has the power only to interpret the Constitution, not the power to change it, so arguments about original meaning have always had special force. Nowadays, we typically associate this approach with political conservatism, and particularly the claims of many self-proclaimed “originalists” who aim to interpret the Constitution according to its “original meaning.” But the truth is that virtually everyone puts enormous weight on history. When faced with opaque features of our Constitution, judges and legal scholars often look for what those provisions meant when they were enacted. In any event, the First Amendment says only that Congress cannot abridge “the freedom of” speech or the press it doesn’t say that Congress cannot restrict speech or the press at all. Laws against committing perjury, disclosing classified information, and making terrorist threats, for instance, all restrict “speech,” but no one seriously doubts their constitutionality. Every well-functioning government needs to restrict at least some speech. But this reading can’t be right, and it never has been. And the reasons why highlight fundamental shifts in American constitutional thought.Īt first glance, the text of the speech and press clauses might appear to prevent Congress from imposing any restrictions on expression. But what exactly does it mean? How far do the speech and press clauses restrict governmental power? The founders, as we will see, answered these questions very differently than we typically do today. The First Amendment says that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” For Americans, this language is familiar. ![]() ![]() ![]() Added activate window delay to adv options, changed default value from 50ms to 100ms.Use accent color to show pasted clips updated italian language file.Follow windows 10 settings for app dark/light.Handle enter key in Delete Clip data window.Fixed issue with always removing / and q from the beginning of the search string.Support horizontal and vertical panning touch gestures.Zoom in on image using ctrl - mouse wheel.Limit past searches to 10 and 50 characters each.Regular expression matching is case insensitive.Added system context menu to hide startup message.Order by sticky clip order first then group, then clip order - updated indexes.Enable / disable edit boxes for max count and keep days in config.Found latest firefox wouldn't accept drops if the cf_hdrop type was on there Added option to not place cf_hdrop onto the drag object when dragging from Ditto.Added new global key to send a copy and save the current clipboard in one shot.If db is on a network drive, or anything other than C: then wait for that db to come online. If database is on a network share refresh Ditto when showing if last write time of db has been updated. ![]() Added option to delete all non used clips.Refresh list after delete all non used clips from task tray.Fixed issue with export to text and image only allowing 1000 clips. If searching for both description and full text use Distinct to ensure we don't return mutliple rows.Added adv option to set the default editor font size.Added a way through add ins to get/set the description.Fixed issue with high cpu with search full text selected when only a few items are returend.Fixed issue with screen resolution changing with scaled dpi settings, window would go smaller.Enable html format by default if no formats are defined.Added a way to force crash, type crash in search and shift-control click.Use string size to create strings, found data sometimes didn't have a null terminator so extra data was at the end of the string.Handle shift - home to select all items above the current selection.Removed icu dlls, use dll included in windows.Use on demand icu dll for upper/lower case manipulation.Don't refresh the list when a copy is made from the description window. When set to always on top refresh active window on first mouse move over window.Don't hide the tooltip window when copying from html viewer, same as rtf.Don't auto hide the window when editing a clip.Fixed issue with global shortcuts window not showing the clip description.Leave selection as is when copying with ctrl-c.Added option to leave window as is after pasting, not moving clip to the top.Default to refreshing the view after pasting.Fixed issue with saving setting to refresh ui after pasting option.Added translation for options - positioning.Fixed issue with custom shortcut ctrl-d adding focus to search box with square box.Fixed issue with opening the description window on a secondary monitor that is to the left of the primary (negative rect values). When setting a custom drag name to append a unique number at the end.Fixed issue with sorting by clip size in delete clip data window.Added view as image to description window.Fixed issue with tooltip not working when title bar is not on the right side.Fixed issue with search text not going away after pasting.Added special paste option to paste as CamelCase.Changed the regex filter to be a find rather than a match.Description window changes - Default to rtf rather than html, handle repeat keys for searching.Enter the name as IsCloudAndHistoryFeatureAvailable and set it's value to 1. ![]() ![]() When the Dream Syndicate emerged in the early 80s, frontman Steve Wynn declared that "we're playing music we want to hear because nobody else is doing it" - he added, "I'll comprise on what I eat or where I sleep, but I won't compromise on what music I play."īoth were true, although their template of Velvet Underground meets Crazy Horse may seem commonplace today (and let's not forget, the Syndicate spawned many imitators), their raw twin guitar, bass and drums approach was not common during an era when slick polished MTV bands ruled. Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions is a reminder the Dream Syndicate have never stopped being a band that plays only by their own rules, and within those boundaries, they know how to win. ![]() And "Straight Lines" and "Trying to Get Over" show that these folks can rock hard when the stars align. ![]() The straightforward yet ambitious pulse of "Where I'll Stand," the reverb-laced "The Chronicles of You," and the spare, troubling meditations of "My Lazy Mind" once again remind listeners how good Wynn is at capturing the thoughts of various lost souls. Wynn has never had a problem delivering a batch of memorable songs, and Ultraviolet Battle Hymns captures ten more tunes worth hearing. On Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions, the Dream Syndicate aim for mood and atmosphere rather than showing off their chops, and the performances serve the nuances of the songs without pushing them to places they don't want to do. It's also every bit as imaginative and uncompromising as what they conjured when they were noisy heroes of the paisley underground Wynn drew on Neu!, Brian Eno, and prog rock as touchstones while writing and recording this music, and the cool, steely minimalism of this music makes room for guitars without depending on six-string fireworks to push this music forward. They also made four studio LPs in their original 1981-1989 incarnation, which means this edition - Wynn on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jason Victor on lead guitar, Mark Walton on bass, Chris Cacavas on keyboards, and Dennis Duck on drums - has now given us a body of work as sizable as what they delivered in their glory days. They've gone out of their way to forge a new identity that isn't beholden to their past, and 2022's Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions is the fourth studio album from the second run of the Dream Syndicate. You wouldn't expect the Dream Syndicate to begin an album with half a minute of abstract, plinky synth sounds straight out of the mid-'70s, but upending expectations has been business as usual for the band since Steve Wynn relaunched them in 2012. ![]() ![]() ![]() This achievement requires you to find all roses in the game.
